So, let’s dive into the top questions you should ask when hiring the right doula for your birth -
Questions to Ask a Doula in a Consultation
When selecting a birth doula, it's important to find someone who aligns with your values and needs. Here are some key questions to ask in your consultation:
What made you want to become a doula?
What is your philosophy on birth? This will help you understand if they lean toward a certain approach, like natural birth or flexibility around interventions.
Can you explain what’s included in your packages? Some doulas offer prenatal visits, postpartum follow-ups, and breastfeeding support, while others focus solely on labor support.
What can I expect in our prenatal visits (where will we meet, how long is each meeting, what will we discuss, etc.)?
When do you go on call for my labor?
When will you support me during labor?
How will you support me during labor to help me with my birth goals?
How will you involve my partner during the birth? Many partners want to be involved, and a good doula will support this and will be able to provide education on how partners can be involved.
What does your backup plan look like? In case your doula is unavailable, having a reliable backup can provide peace of mind.
